What once was the ultimate symbol of freedom, used to transport people around Europe and discover new places is now locked in place. The barge boat has now taken on its second life as a house boat on the KNSM island in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Over time, each room in the 150m2 boat has been lovingly restored by different artists and designers, and now the last room remaining is the steering house (or stuurhuis), the control center of this freedom.
Our idea was to look at the medium in which the boat traveled, water, and freeze it in time, like the boat is now frozen in place.
The interior of the stuurhuis is one undulating interior surface mimicking the waves of the water it used to travel on. Seating flows into tables, into walls and into the ceiling creating one undefinable surface which is used for a range of different activities - writing, reading, chatting or just sitting in one spot. Modular furniture is overrated, why not just construct the whole thing yourself?
Construct me is a range of fun and interesting pieces of hardware which people can use to make their own furniture from scratch.
This was a concept presented in a Milanese ferramenta in Italy at the Milan design week 2015. Droog presented over 150 pieces of individual hardware.
The team from droog won best tech award for our exhibition.
